El Capitan is 10.11 The minimum requirement for the latest build of Office 2016 is 10.12 You can download an older version of the installer from this web site. Older versions (16.15 and older) will run in 10.11. Assuming you are talking about Microsoft Office 2016, then its requirement is OSx 10.10 or later, meaning OSx versions 10.10 and higher. 10.11 is higher than 10.10 so it will work on 10.11. Millions of people use Microsoft Office 2016 on el Capitan and Sierra without any major issues.

You can use both Office 2011 and Office 2016 at the same time. However it's recommended to have only one Outlook identity open at a time.

OS X Compatibility

Office for Mac 2016 requires Yosemite 10.10.

Office 2011 runs under Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra.

Office 2008 runs under Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan. There are a few minor quirks under Mavericks and higher. While the Office 2008 apps will open in Sierra, you will get crashes and unexpected behavior. Not recommended for Sierra. Office 2008 is End of Life software. It will receive no further updates.

Office for Mac 2004 is a PowerPC app and will not run under Lion or newer. Runs under Snow Leopard. Office 2004 is End of Life software. It will receive no further updates.

Office for Mac X is a PowerPC app and will not run under Lion or newer. Runs under Snow Leopard and older versions of OS X. Office X is End of Life software. It will receive no further updates.
